FAQs
What is a notary public allowed to do?
By law, a notary can take acknowledgments, administer oaths and affirmations, perform jurats, take depositions, and certify copies of power of attorney.
Why do documents need to be notarized?
The primary reason is to prevent fraud. A notary serves as an impartial witness to ensure the identity of a person who is required to sign a document.
Can a notary help to prepare documents?
No. A notary is not allowed to assist in drafting documents aside from making sure the documents are signed and dated in the proper place and by the right person.
How long does it take to have a document notarized?
The process usually takes about five minutes for a single document. In addition to providing a proper ID, customers need to sign the notary’s public record book and provide a thumbprint.
Can a notary refuse to notarize a document?
Yes. If a notary can’t properly identify a client or be certain the client knows what they are signing, they can refuse to notarize a document. A notary can be held legally responsible if a document they notarize turns out to be fraudulent.
What types of documents can be notarized?
Notaries can notarize a wide range of documents, including wills, trusts, real estate documents, loan documents, powers of attorney, and affidavits. If you're unsure about a specific document, feel free to ask!
What if my document does not have a California notary disclaimer?
If your document lacks a California notary disclaimer, I will need to attach one to ensure it meets state requirements for notarization.
How do I schedule a notary appointment?
You can schedule an appointment by calling or texting 619-800-2066 or by sending an email. Same-day service is often available.
Should a document be filled out before meeting with Semper Sign?
If you have not yet signed the document, fill out everything in advance except the signature and date lines. Once we meet up and I verify your ID information, I'll have you sign and date the document in front of me, then I'll complete the notary section and stamp it. There shouldn't be missing information in your form, it should be filled out completely prior to our appointment, except the signature and date (there may or may not be a spot for the date next to your signature, depending on the form).
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring the document(s) you need notarized and at least one acceptable form of ID. It’s also helpful to have any witnesses required by the document present.
Can I have documents notarized without being present?
No, you must be present for the notarization. Notaries need to verify your identity in person before notarizing any documents.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact us as soon as possible. A non-refundable deposit may apply for cancellations made within a certain time frame.
Is there a fee for notary services?
Yes, $15 per signature/per person plus travel fee. A clear fee schedule will be discussed and agreed upon before the appointment.
How much do travel fees cost?
Semper Sign charges $15 per signature notarized, plus a travel fee which depends on the location. Travel fees are determined by the zip code and/or area you are located in.
Will I be charged if I don’t show up for my appointment?
